PopStroke is a Tiger Woods-backed experiential golf and entertainment venue that is quickly expanding throughout the United States. For those who grew up on evenings of windmill mini golf, PopStroke is taking that nostalgic experience to a whole new level. Initially launched here in South Florida, PopStroke is now bringing its unique brand of experiential golf excitement to the rest of the country. SYZYGY Global was recently selected by PopStroke to design and build innovative patio covers for its outdoor dining facilities at new locations in Glendale, Arizona and Katy, Texas. Most recently, SYZYGY Global completed an additional roof top dining patio for the newest PopStroke location in Sarasota, Florida, a city of unique charm that combines seaside relaxation and luxury appeal all in one destination.

We’ve completed many distinguishable pergola projects for the region’s most coveted private golf resorts, club house restaurants, and more. Our award-winning projects at Boca West Country Club, the Club at Admirals Cove, and Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club offered an opportunity for the SYZYGY team to showcase new levels of luxury in outdoor design. This unique expertise perfectly fits the elevated styling of the expanding PopStroke facilities.
The entire PopStroke experience is designed to enhance every element of the golf entertainment experience. Only working with the best, the company partnered with the world’s most well-known golfer, Tiger Woods, to design its modernized putting courses. Each facility incorporates two unique 18-hole putting courses with an array of interactive technologies. A giant digital leaderboard hangs above the facility allowing players to compete head-to-head, or with their own group. Each PopStroke also offers a complete dining experience with a full-service bar and food service plus mobile ordering from the PopStroke app for those looking to have food and drinks delivered to the course.
The SYZYGY Global team was tasked with designing a modern pergola to protect the second-floor outdoor dining space that overlooks the 36 holes of rolling putting courses. For these projects in Glendale, AZ and Katy, TX, the SYZYGY team designed a 4-zone motorized louvered pergola that could open when the weather is ideal and close to block the mid-day sun or occasional rain showers. The dynamic patio cover allowed the PopStroke operations to guarantee their outdoor dining facilities could service golfers in any weather condition. To provide even more control in the outdoor dining room, the team also incorporated outdoor patio fans to improve air circulation and infrared heaters for cooler evenings. To fit seamlessly with the PopStroke facility’s exterior, the team opted for a two-tone pergola featuring black columns and frame, with white louvers that matched the brand colors.
Early in 2023, PopStroke returned to its birthplace of South Florida to open a new facility in downtown Sarasota. Similar to other locations around the country, the new golf entertainment facility featured extensive outdoor dining spaces for guests to enjoy before and after their rounds of golf. While PopStroke envisioned its various locations around the country would look fairly similar, offering similar amenities, each course is entirely different. This allows PopStroke fans to play different courses with different challenges as they travel to new locations.
For the SYZYGY Global team, designing an adjustable louvered pergola roof shade structure to cover the Sarasota location’s outdoor dining area presented some unique challenges as well. Designing residential outdoor living spaces and commercial outdoor dining protection for properties throughout South Florida requires special engineering. Given the routine wind storms and tropical weather that impacts the state, pergolas need to be ready to withstand these weather events.
The SYZYGY team began the preparations for a storm-resistant pergola in the early design phases by studying the prevailing winds and predominant weather conditions for the west coast of Florida. With an understanding of the types of wind forces that the pergola would need to endure, the design team set to work engineering the footings and assembly hardware necessary to meet local building codes. With the proper research and engineering plans in place, the project received approval by all local entities.
To ensure that PopStroke Sarasota’s commercial pergola was as well prepared as possible for a hurricane, the team also incorporated smart sensor arrays into the motorized louvered roof pergola. With wind sensors tracking heavy gusts, the smart pergola will automatically open the louvers in high winds. This eliminates the potential for powerful updrafts to damage the louvers.
Additionally, rain sensors were included in the design which monitor for showers and automatically close the roof if a storm is detected. While this feature is less focused on storm resistance, the intuitive capability makes all the difference for guests and operations staff, aiming to make the PopStroke experiences as seamless as possible.
