The Gold Coast is known for its many exquisite private clubs and resorts, and Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club is one of the standout gems among this exclusive group. Taking full advantage of the splendid views and natural surroundings of Jupiter, Florida, Jonathan’s Landing is a haven of tropical scenery. With three award-winning championship golf courses designed by famed Tom Fazio and Gil Hanse, the views from the main clubhouse take in rolling fairways intertwined by canals connecting throughout the resort community. Luxurious and unpretentious, Jonathan’s Landing delivers a relaxing environment for its members to enjoy Florida’s favorite leisure sports, a 13,000 square foot spa and wellness center, and multiple amazing dining destinations. When the management team at Jonathan’s Landing decided to expand the all-weather outdoor dining space on its patio deck, they turned to SYZYGY Global, the leading outdoor living contractors in South Florida.
The Pub 1696 is one of the multiple dining destinations available to Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club members. The casual indoor/outdoor dining venue and bar enjoys sweeping views of the surrounding golf course and nearby lake. The Pub 1696’s large second story patio is a favorite of members wrapping up a round of golf or looking to relax with family and friends. To make the venue more accessible to members, the management team at Jonathan’s Landing sought to upgrade the patio from its traditional patio tables and umbrellas to an all-weather patio cover that would accommodate more diners and ensure the space was available regardless of the weather. SYZYGY Global designed a five-zone adjustable louvered pergola attached to the existing clubhouse building and extending the full breadth of the large patio. In addition to making the restaurant a more inviting venue, the expanded outdoor dining area enables Pub 1696 to accommodate an additional estimated 50+ guests.
The main challenge of this pergola project was ensuring a precise fit on the balcony. With an existing railing surrounding the entire second floor balcony, the SYZYGY team needed to make sure the support columns would fall just inside the existing perimeter. Designing a five-zone pergola system allowed the custom pergola to be fabricated to these precise measurements.
The Jonathan’s Landing team also required the patio to have full coverage from the doorway to the indoor dining space to the far reaches of the patio. Affixing one side of the pergola to the existing clubhouse building ensured guests could access the elevated dining space without getting wet in the occasional rain shower. To accommodate the massive amount of rainwater collected by the new pergola, SYZYGY designed a super gutter at the pergolas attachment point that channeled all of the water into the building’s existing downspouts, depositing rainwater neatly in adjoining gardens.
The patio had previously featured standard patio tables with umbrellas and string lights for ambiance and to illuminate evening dinners, To keep the restaurant bright and welcoming even when the louvers of the new pergola were closed, SYZYGY designed the roof with flush mount LED lighting that staff could control remotely. The design also included custom motorized retractable screens which could be lowered to block some light if a sunset became too glaring, and to keep pesky mosquitos away from diners in the evenings. In all, expanding the all-weather coverage for Pub 1696 allowed the club to accommodate an additional 50 seats, and gave managers the ability to confidently book al fresco reservations without concern for sweltering days or rainy evenings to interrupt diners.

Designing the new pergola to seamlessly fit in with Jonathan Landing’s existing color scheme, the project was completed in all white to match the restaurant’s window and door frames, and provide a bit of a colorful counterweight to the beige exterior walls and marble tile floor.
