Delray Beach Florida is one of the seaside gems that dot the Atlantic seaboard of South Florida. Beloved for its unique mix of casual beach town vibes, high-end shopping and an exquisite restaurant scene, this two-mile stretch of beach is home to some of the most luxurious ocean-side properties in the entire country. The palatial estates that rise among the coveted listings on South Ocean Blvd were designed by some of the most prestigious architects in history. For owners of these properties, home renovations must maintain a delicate balance between the original intentions of the architect as well as meeting the needs of modern, luxury living. Such was the case when SYZYGY Global was selected to design an adjustable louvered roof pergola for one homeowner’s rooftop pool.
The oceanfront lifestyle in Delray Beach, Florida is known for its ultimate luxury, and this picturesque seaside estate exceeded those expectations. Featuring a quintessential alabaster white color scheme, the magnificent home is a fairytale dream from the moment one sets foot on the property. The approaching driveway opens to a gloriously landscaped courtyard before reaching the columned grand entryway to the main home. Flanking the courtyard, and elevated on the second floor, this home features a rooftop lap pool and pool deck. With the South Florida sun making the luxury rooftop pool inaccessible during the mid-day, the homeowners sought to create shade and rain protection that would allow their rooftop swims to continue unencumbered by the heat and glaring sun.
Designing a custom pergola for a rooftop deck, upstairs pool deck or patio comes with some unique challenges that differ from projects on the ground. The structural challenge is how to properly anchor the pergola. For this project, SYZYGY designers utilized an existing perimeter wall on the rooftop as the anchor point which allowed the pergola to cover the entire rooftop pool and kept support columns from taking up valuable square footage. To make the connection, the SYZYGY team had to fabricate custom baseplates for each column, and customize the columns to meet the varying heights of the existing exterior wall. Designing the pergola in seven independently-adjusted louvered roof zones gave the homeowners the ability to control the amount of shade across the rooftop pool, and ensured sufficient spacing between the support columns to maintain the sweeping ocean views.
Another challenge presented by rooftop projects such as this is ensuring the new construction fits seamlessly with the existing architecture. Rooftop projects need to complement the home’s existing roofline or the new addition can look like an afterthought. To ensure the new pergola would not detract from the home’s existing roofline, SYZYGY designers customized the pergola height to make the new structure look at home with the surrounding architecture. Setting the pergola roof at 8’ 9” meant the structure was a touch shorter than standard pergolas, but still provided plenty of clearance.
With projects of this caliber, it’s the fine attention to detail that truly elevates the final result from beauty to art. To bring a unique architectural feel to the pool deck, SYZYGY designers mounted the louvers parallel to the long lap pool. This created complimentary shadow lines when the louvers were open. The louver direction allowed the deep blue southern sky to remain visible when the louvers adjusted. For this project, the Azenco R-Blade was a perfect match for this sleek home’s exterior. With no visible assembly hardware, the R-Blade always delivers clean exterior lines, and those uninterrupted sightlines were a perfect fit for this project, especially as the LED lights provided beautiful ambient lighting in the evenings.
Merging this new pergola into the surrounding architecture and style of this luxurious home was indeed a main priority, so the SYZYGY design team paid particular attention to the color of the surrounding walls. While it may sound simple to design a white pergola, there are in reality innumerable shades and patinas of white. For this project, the team used our advanced color matching capabilities to customize a powder coating hue that was an exact match to the home’s universal alabaster exterior. Ultimately, it was this perfectly-matched color scheme that brought the entire project together. Viewed from any angle, the newly constructed pool pergola looks to have been an original element of the home’s noble architecture.
